Another great story

Great period piece。 Plenty action and a good mystery。 Wonderful characters。 Baldacci is a fantastic story teller。

Great storyReally well written。 Great characters。 Good plot line。 Always looking for the next twist of turn of a Baldacci story

Good book a bit different than the usualBooks I read but this series has captured my attention。

I am definitely a fan of this new series by David Baldacci。 Baldacci has a real talent for creating great characters。 Aloysius Archer is a WWII vet, an ex-con, and a really good man who has now become a private investigator。 Historical fiction mixed with suspense, a little bit of romance and even an character or two who you love to hate makes the "Archer" series a wonderful era to lose yourself for a time。 I am definitely a fan of this new series by David Baldacci。 Baldacci has a real talent for creating great characters。 Aloysius Archer is a WWII vet, an ex-con, and a really good man who has now become a private investigator。 Historical fiction mixed with suspense, a little bit of romance and even an character or two who you love to hate makes the "Archer" series a wonderful era to lose yourself for a time。 。。。more

This is really a 2。5 star that I rounded up (I really wish Goodreads would allow half stars)。 I sat on the previous book in this series for quite some time and ended up loving it。 I ended up waiting a while to read this one, too, but didn't quite love it as much。 This was an incredibly slow burn, with nothing much of substance really happening until about 60% in。 A tighter edit would have really helped。 The end is good, but it takes a really long time to get there。 I do enjoy Baldacci's works, s This is really a 2。5 star that I rounded up (I really wish Goodreads would allow half stars)。 I sat on the previous book in this series for quite some time and ended up loving it。 I ended up waiting a while to read this one, too, but didn't quite love it as much。 This was an incredibly slow burn, with nothing much of substance really happening until about 60% in。 A tighter edit would have really helped。 The end is good, but it takes a really long time to get there。 I do enjoy Baldacci's works, so this may have been a misfire on his part。 I will consider reading Archer #3 before giving up on this series。 。。。more

I’ve read a number of Baldacci books and have enjoyed them。 But I did not like this one。 The ‘mystery’ was solved by Archer that was purely speculative only to tidy the story up。 Disappointing。。

I really enjoyed the first book in the Archer series and generally enjoy Baldaccis writing but I was disappointed in this book。The plot moved at a very slow pace and I thought a lot of the dialogue was quiet corny。

Still a great fan of David Baldacci but this is the second book by this author that has left me somewhat disappointed。 In this novel we are introduced to private investigator ‘Archer’ starting his new career in California just after WWII。 A war veteran with a ‘murky’ past Archer is utterly believable。 The authors usual attention to detail and great descriptive style allows you to visualise every move and scene and is totally absorbing。What I found less convincing about this book is that most of Still a great fan of David Baldacci but this is the second book by this author that has left me somewhat disappointed。 In this novel we are introduced to private investigator ‘Archer’ starting his new career in California just after WWII。 A war veteran with a ‘murky’ past Archer is utterly believable。 The authors usual attention to detail and great descriptive style allows you to visualise every move and scene and is totally absorbing。What I found less convincing about this book is that most of the first half is like a ‘warm up act’。 Yes we are introduced to Liberty Callahan who plays a significant role throughout the story but so much else seemed unconnected and a distraction。The second half of the book is much more the intricate detective story。 Fast moving, twists and turns and interesting characters。 Great well researched and believable storyline。 Overall finished on a high but just felt book was again longer than it needed to be。 。。。more

I've read a number of Baldacci novels and this one is easily my favorite。 I've not read a book of his with quite this noir feel to it。 As I read it, I could easily see the movie in my mind, set shortly after WWII, with great cars, sassy dames, suave youngish men who can handle themselves in a tight spot, wearing great suits and sporting a sharp fedora。 Think 2001 Nero Wolfe television series with a young Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin。 I enjoyed the book very much。 I've read a number of Baldacci novels and this one is easily my favorite。 I've not read a book of his with quite this noir feel to it。 As I read it, I could easily see the movie in my mind, set shortly after WWII, with great cars, sassy dames, suave youngish men who can handle themselves in a tight spot, wearing great suits and sporting a sharp fedora。 Think 2001 Nero Wolfe television series with a young Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin。 I enjoyed the book very much。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t the best thriller I’ve read。 While it was a good story, the beginning build up was just too long。 The story took a while to get going and sometimes so many coincidences work against the story。 I’ll still read part 3 and see where Archer and Liberty take us。

The GAMBLING MAN is book #2 of the Aloysius Archer series by David Baldacci。I really like David Baldacci novels。 That being said, this a "gumshoe" type novel set after WW2 with all the speech cliches you can ever imagine。 It's really too much。 And just as I I want to really dislike this series, Baldacci puts in just enough humor so that you can't help but eventually fall for the ridiculous narrative and enjoy the story。 As a "who dunnit", Baldacci always delivers 。。。 4* The third book in this s The GAMBLING MAN is book #2 of the Aloysius Archer series by David Baldacci。I really like David Baldacci novels。 That being said, this a "gumshoe" type novel set after WW2 with all the speech cliches you can ever imagine。 It's really too much。 And just as I I want to really dislike this series, Baldacci puts in just enough humor so that you can't help but eventually fall for the ridiculous narrative and enjoy the story。 As a "who dunnit", Baldacci always delivers 。。。 4* The third book in this series is DREAM TOWN, which I just purchased。 。。。more

Baldacci never really disappoints when you are in the mood for something with a few twists and turns。 This one was about average for his writing。 The fact that only a few weeks later I can't think of anything outstanding to write about, says something。。。。。 Baldacci never really disappoints when you are in the mood for something with a few twists and turns。 This one was about average for his writing。 The fact that only a few weeks later I can't think of anything outstanding to write about, says something。。。。。 。。。more

Not sure what to make of this one。 I really enjoyed One Good Deed which introduced Archer and this new series。 For the most part this one dragged。 For the most part I felt like Baldacci was trying to imitate an old gangster movie with Humphrey Bogart or at the very least mimic a Mickey Spillane novel。 The descriptions of each character were ridiculously minute, and the “snappy dialogue” was much too contrived to ring true。 The death count was absurd also, but then … maybe not in today’s world。Ye Not sure what to make of this one。 I really enjoyed One Good Deed which introduced Archer and this new series。 For the most part this one dragged。 For the most part I felt like Baldacci was trying to imitate an old gangster movie with Humphrey Bogart or at the very least mimic a Mickey Spillane novel。 The descriptions of each character were ridiculously minute, and the “snappy dialogue” was much too contrived to ring true。 The death count was absurd also, but then … maybe not in today’s world。Yes, I guess everything was too much “over the top” to be believed or enjoyed。 I did enjoy learning about the Delahaye and some California history – always a plus with me。 And I appreciated the fact that the timeline moved forward smoothly。 And I also appreciated the subtlety employed with the personal desires and in those scenes。I’m looking forward to the 3rd in this series, but I hope it’s more like the first than the second。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was pretty good and I would have given it four stars except for one thing。 The book starts in Reno with an extended subplot about Archer tangling with mafia-types over an old man's gambling debts。 Given how much of the book was devoted to this subplot, I kept expecting the mafiosos to show back up in surprising fashion。。。。except they never did。 This book was pretty good and I would have given it four stars except for one thing。 The book starts in Reno with an extended subplot about Archer tangling with mafia-types over an old man's gambling debts。 Given how much of the book was devoted to this subplot, I kept expecting the mafiosos to show back up in surprising fashion。。。。except they never did。 。。。more

3。5 stars, It was slow going at first。 Getting to know the characters。 This is set after World War II and the time period was a consideration getting used to。 Archer, Liberty Callahan are the main characters。 I read the first installment but did not remember alot about it。 After a while it got to move faster with the story revolving around several incidents that Archer now a PI in training investigates。
